This is our Saturday recap, so we're doing the whole week in one sitting: the wins you may have already heard about, and a handful of stories that deserve more attention than they got. Isar Aerospace reached orbit from European soil. ESA handed out a wave of contracts in Paris. Stoke Space raised a billion dollars to chase reusability. We covered this one already, but it's worth sitting with for a second: Isar Aerospace's Spectrum rocket reached orbit from Andøya Spaceport in Norway, on its second flight, becoming the first commercial rocket to deliver payloads to orbit from continental Europe. Five CubeSats and a technology experiment rode along. Eighteen months after the first Spectrum attempt ended in a fireball thirty seconds off the pad, that's a genuinely big deal — a real payload, not just a test article proving the vehicle can fly straight. As @AndrewParsonson, a contributor covering European spaceflight, put it on X, there was "some beautiful footage from Saturday's Spectrum launch." Here's the catch, though: Isar is building toward a facility meant to churn out forty rockets a year, and none of that manufacturing scale exists yet. One successful flight is proof of concept. Sticking in Europe — ESA capped its Paris summit week by handing The Exploration Company a seven hundred sixty million euro Phase Two contract, covering an initial demonstration of its Nyx cargo spacecraft to the space station, plus options for two more flights. ESA's own account called it a deal under ALADDIN, the continent's commercial cargo return program, covering "an initial demonstration mission of the Nyx capsule" and future low-Earth-orbit cargo service. That's a headline number Europe can finally point to when it talks about space autonomy. But notice the tense: Nyx hasn't flown that demonstration mission yet. A contract with options is a promise with money behind it — it is not flight heritage, and the real test is whether Nyx actually reaches the station on schedule.

And then there's the biggest check written all week: Stoke Space closed an initial billion-dollar tranche of a Series E round, pushing its total raised to two point three billion dollars. The money funds Stoke's first orbital launch attempt and a newly disclosed, larger second-generation rocket called Nova Block Two, aimed at carrying fifteen metric tons to low Earth orbit. That's a serious bet that reusability — flying the same hardware again and again instead of building a new rocket every time — is where this whole market is headed. Here's my read: the size of that check tells you investors think the launch capacity crunch is real. But Stoke hasn't flown an orbital rocket yet — the first vehicle, Nova Pathfinder, is still targeting an early twenty twenty-seven debut, and the fifteen-ton vehicle isn't due until twenty twenty-nine. Both dates can slip, and a lot of this round is priced on them not slipping.

Not every story out of Europe this week was a win. NASA withdrew a radar instrument it had committed to Europe's EnVision Venus mission, which means ESA now has to build a replacement on its own — and it's reportedly looking as far as China for help — as the current administration pulls back from some international science partnerships. It's a sharp contrast sitting right next to all those Paris contract signings: even while Europe writes checks to its own companies, it's absorbing the cost of Washington stepping back from commitments it already made. To be clear, this is one instrument on one mission, not a sign that NASA and ESA are done cooperating generally — but it's exactly the kind of friction that makes Europe's push for independent capability look less like ambition and more like necessity.

Now here's one that flew under the radar this week, and it's the taxpayer story of the bunch. Rocket Lab has filed a formal protest with the Government Accountability Office over NASA's September first decision to award Blue Origin a firm-fixed-price contract worth up to seven hundred million dollars to build, launch, and operate the Mars Telecommunications Network. In its own words, posted on X, Rocket Lab said: "NASA's award decision appears to be inconsistent with the eligibility criteria mandated by Congress," and the company is also challenging NASA's technical evaluation of its own bid as flawed. So what does the taxpayer actually get here? A competed, fixed-price deep-space infrastructure contract now sits under formal review, which could delay a network meant to be operational at Mars by twenty thirty. I want to be careful with the framing: a GAO protest is a request for procedural review, not a finding that NASA did anything wrong, and Rocket Lab's allegations are unproven. There's a wrinkle worth knowing, too — Blue Origin itself protested and lost a NASA award back in twenty twenty-one, then went on to win a later contract anyway. So protests here don't always predict outcomes. What I'll be watching is NASA's actual rebuttal once GAO's review gets underway, because that's where we'll learn whether this was a paperwork problem or a real evaluation dispute.

Another story that deserved more attention than it got: Antares, the nuclear microreactor startup, just won a hundred sixty-one million dollar Strategic Breakthrough award from the Air Force and Space Force's acquisition office — which the company calls the largest Defense Department space nuclear award to date. The award covers a ground demonstration of its R1-S reactor and integration work toward eventual flight certification. Think about the stakes for a second: the United States hasn't flown a nuclear reactor in space since nineteen sixty-five, and a company that closed a four hundred seventy million dollar private round just months ago is now the anchor of the Pentagon's boldest bet on getting back into that business. Here's the honest caveat, and it matters: this funds a ground demonstration and a path toward certification, not an actual flight contract, and by the company's own CEO's admission, the space nuclear market itself is still immature. The number to watch is the timeline from that ground demonstration to an actual in-space test — because that's the gap between a very good press release and a reactor that's actually flown.

Sticking with defense money for a moment — the Space Force has picked Lake Kickapoo, Texas, as its preferred site for the third and final installation of the Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability network, a trilateral surveillance system built alongside the United Kingdom and Australia. Civil construction is expected to wrap in twenty twenty-nine, with operations starting in twenty thirty. That's actually an acceleration from a target the GAO had flagged at twenty thirty-two, which sounds like good news for schedule-conscious taxpayers. But here's the thing worth saying out loud: this program has, in its own history, been plagued with delays almost since it started, and Texas is still described as the "preferred" site, pending final planning approvals and a construction contract award — it isn't finalized yet. My standard on this kind of story doesn't change based on who's building it: an accelerated date is worth celebrating when it holds, and worth tracking hard when the program in question has already slipped before.

Now for a story that's been simmering for years and finally has real heat behind it: could United Launch Alliance's money problems force Boeing and Lockheed Martin to actually sell the joint venture? Ars Technica's reporting lays out the pressure — ULA is trying to resume Vulcan launches after anomalies hit two of its four flights, with the Space Force having paused launches pending a fix. And the stakes are enormous: ULA is sitting on roughly twenty-five Department of Defense Vulcan bookings and dozens of Amazon Leo launches. If ULA's reliability or finances wobble, that's not an abstract corporate story — it's the difference between the Pentagon having real launch competition and drifting toward one dominant provider by default. I'll say the obvious thing, too: sale speculation about ULA has recurred for years without a deal ever closing, so treat this as serious financial pressure and analysis, not a done transaction. What would actually move this from rumor to reality is a specific bid, on the table, from a specific buyer — nothing in this week's reporting gets us there yet.

Last one, and it's a useful corrective to a week full of new-rocket headlines: Ars Technica reports that some satellite operators still say dedicated launch beats rideshare — the practice of splitting one rocket's capacity among many small satellites to split the cost — for missions that need a specific orbit, a specific schedule, or a level of mission assurance rideshare simply can't promise. It's almost funny, set against everything else this week: Isar reaching orbit, Stoke raising a billion dollars, all of it chasing scale and cost efficiency — and yet there's still a customer base that wants the expensive, dedicated option and is willing to pay for it. The honest limit here is that this is operator testimony, not a market-size number; nobody's put a figure on how big or durable that boutique appetite actually is against rideshare's price advantage. But it's the quiet explanation for why small dedicated launchers keep finding customers even as SpaceX undercuts them on cost — and it's worth remembering the next time a headline declares rideshare has won the whole market.
