We covered this one earlier in the week, so the short version: NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched successfully aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center on August 30th, and it deployed cleanly — both Falcon Heavy side boosters came back down for reuse, which is its own quiet flex. One more from earlier in the week, and this one's a clean case study in how Europe buys sovereign capability. The IRIS2 program is a fifteen-point-six-billion-euro effort to build Europe's own secure-connectivity constellation — and this week it produced its first big industrial order, when SES awarded OHB a contract worth nearly one billion euros to build the medium-Earth-orbit satellite platforms. So the headline isn't really the number, it's the shape of the deal: European hardware, from a European company, for a European program. Nobody's published an independent benchmark yet on how this compares, cost-per-satellite, to SES's existing O3b mPOWER fleet — so I can't tell you whether Europe got a good price. Let's give both sides their actual words. Washington's line, through OSTP, is that it 'continues to collaborate with allies and partners in space' and wants 'productive conversations at the Space Summit' — not exactly a confirmation of pressure, but not a denial either. French and European officials say it's 'difficult not to link' the withdrawals to that pressure, and frame the whole summit as part of a push toward European sovereignty in launch and satellite communications, independent of American providers. The summit is still going ahead, with Macron and von der Leyen both scheduled to speak. What actually triggered the concern — a specific line in the EU Space Law, spectrum rules, something else — nobody's said publicly yet. That's the open question once the summit actually starts.

That Paris story doesn't happen in a vacuum, and this week gave us the domestic European half of it. A new report from ASD Eurospace, built on anonymized interviews with fifteen space-industry CEOs, found widespread frustration with how Europe's space sector is currently structured — real frustration, from people running the actual companies, just not attached to names you can call and double-check. If you haven't been tracking it, the backdrop here is the European Launcher Challenge, ESA's effort to fund multiple competing European rocket companies rather than picking one national champion — the idea being that competition, not a single flag-carrier, gets Europe to reliable launch faster. But the frustration itself, arriving alongside a billion-euro IRIS2 order and a diplomatic spat with Washington, tells you Europe's space ambitions and Europe's space governance are currently pulling in different directions.

Europe's launch ambitions ran into more friction this week, too. Isar Aerospace scrubbed its planned September 4th second flight attempt of the Spectrum rocket, and it scrubbed late, several hours after launch-related road closures near Andøya, Norway had already gone into effect. No official cause has been given for this specific scrub as of writing, so I won't guess at one. What I will point out is the pattern: Spectrum's second flight has now been scrubbed or delayed across attempts in January, March, April, June, and now September — five separate campaigns without a clean countdown. And here's why it matters beyond one vehicle: this is happening in the exact same season European governments are pouring money into homegrown launch capability, through the Launcher Challenge and IRIS2 alike. You can fund sovereign capacity all you want, but funding doesn't buy you a clean countdown. Isar's actual flight rate is the truer measure of where Europe's launch independence really stands right now — and right now, that measure says: not yet.

Here's one that didn't get its due this week, and it matters for anyone watching China's private launch sector. A new listing rule from the Shanghai Stock Exchange, issued in December as part of a broader set of market reforms, sets a threshold for commercial rocket companies seeking to go public: applicants now have to achieve a successful orbital insertion of a payload using a medium-to-large, reusable launch vehicle. That's a meaningful reshaping of the competitive dynamics in China's fast-multiplying private launch scene — it turns a stock listing from a fundraising shortcut into a reward for actually flying reusable hardware, which changes who gets capital and when. This landed the same week Galactic Energy's Pallas-1 rocket debuted successfully and reached orbit, so the capital-markets rule and the flight-rate reality are moving together. We don't have yet a named list of which specific Chinese launch startups are closest to actually qualifying under this rule; that's the detail worth chasing as more of them attempt their own orbital flights on reusable vehicles. But the strategic read is straightforward: China just tied its stock market directly to who's actually flying reusable rockets to orbit.

And last for this week — the story that's exactly the taxpayer-value question this show keeps asking, just from an unusually candid source. Breaking Defense reports that in Mojave Desert heat exceeding one hundred degrees, Army Starlink terminals were overheating, and soldiers resorted to draping them in wet t-shirts to keep them cool — an improvised fix, not a design failure, but a real one, in real conditions. Officials on the ground were weighing that against the cost of bespoke, military-grade systems built to survive exactly those conditions. That's a general officer, on the record, comparing commercial-off-the-shelf pricing against purpose-built defense hardware in plain terms, which is rarer than you'd think. My standard here is the same one I apply to every big contract winner in this industry: if you're selling into defense procurement, the taxpayer deserves an honest account of where the commercial gear actually held up and where it didn't — not a marketing sheet. This finding comes from one field exercise, relayed by one general, so it shouldn't get generalized into an Army-wide verdict on commercial space hardware. But it's a genuinely useful data point in a debate the Space Force is having elsewhere too, about how much of its operations it can actually hand off to commercial systems that weren't built for a desert.
