Three days ago, Europe's space agency posted a two-line announcement about signing its first launch contracts under something called the European Launcher Challenge — Europe's attempt to stop leaning so hard on Ariane 6 and Vega-C, its main heavy and small rockets. Today we get the actual numbers, and here's the shape of it: the top awardee is pulling in nearly forty million euros more than the smallest one. NASASpaceFlight.com reports Isar Aerospace landed one hundred ninety-seven point eight million euros, Rocket Factory Augsburg got one hundred eighty-six point nine million, and Spain's PLD Space picked up one hundred fifty-eight point nine million — a fourth contract, with ArianeGroup's MaiaSpace, is still being finalized, and ESA says that's expected to resume within weeks. Now, before you take that as free money: it's gated. Component A — the part covering actual operational launches through 2030 — only pays out once each company reaches orbit by the end of 2027, and not one of these three vehicles has done that yet. Component B funds vehicle upgrades that have to be demonstrated by 2028. Member states actually more than doubled ESA's original funding envelope for this program at last November's ministerial meeting, per NASASpaceFlight.com, so appetite outran even the agency's own ask. And it's worth remembering one of the five original finalists, Scotland's Orbex, already collapsed into administration back in February, so this field is thinner than when the challenge started. My read: Europe just bought itself competition, not launches — the milestone is where this gets real.

Now, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman went on Fox News and made a specific prediction about SpaceX's Starship program — the giant reusable rocket meant to eventually fly astronauts and cargo to the Moon and beyond. On X, the account @cb_doge posted footage of Isaacman saying, quote, "I think you're going to start seeing Starships launch on a near weekly cadence going into 2027," end quote, while also noting SpaceX is working on the lunar lander version of the vehicle. Falcon Heavy and the observatory are targeting liftoff at seven twenty-six a.m. Eastern from Kennedy Space Center's pad thirty-nine A, on a trajectory toward the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2 — a gravitationally stable spot about one and a half million kilometers from Earth — with NASA and SpaceX teams on console and a Launch Readiness Review completed this past Friday that formally cleared the vehicle, the observatory, and the weather. SpaceX itself posted on X, less than two hours before the window, that weather was fifty percent favorable — so I want to be careful and say this is a targeted liftoff, not a confirmed one, at the time we're recording this. Now, some background on how we got here, because it's a genuinely wild story if you haven't followed it. Roman traces back to a 2010 decadal survey — essentially astronomers' own ranked wish list for the coming decade — that named this telescope, then called WFIRST, its single top priority. It eventually got a Hubble-sized mirror courtesy of a couple of leftover spy-satellite telescopes donated by the National Reconnaissance Office, and NASA finished building the thing by last November. And then, with the hardware essentially complete, leaked budget documents for fiscal year twenty twenty-six proposed the largest cut in NASA's history — a twenty-four percent reduction agency-wide, with science programs alone taking a fifty percent hit, and language that specifically said there would be no funding for telescopes other than Hubble and Webb. Roman, already built, was on that list. But here's the harder question, and it's one I don't think today resolves: if Roman flies successfully this morning, who gets to claim it? Does the administration point to the launch as evidence its overall approach to NASA was fine all along, or does credit sit entirely with the appropriators who wrote the bigger check? I don't think there's a clean answer, and a successful liftoff proves the hardware works, not who was right about the budget fight. There's a second question that matters more for the next decade of NASA science than this one does: Roman had something almost no other mission has — a 2010 decadal survey naming it the field's literal top priority, plus billions of dollars of already-sunk hardware sitting on a shelf, which made it politically expensive to kill. The next flagship mission that runs into budget trouble might not have either of those things. So the honest takeaway isn't that Congress will always save the science — it's that Congress saved this particular, unusually well-protected mission, and we don't yet know if that pattern holds for whatever comes next. Time for the Hype Check. I'm giving this one an eight out of ten on substance, and that's rare for me to say about a NASA flagship. This isn't a render or a paper study — it's four point three billion dollars of actual hardware sitting on a real rocket at a real pad this morning, built by a mission that survived a real attempt to kill it. I'm holding back two points: we don't have a confirmed successful launch as of this recording, given SpaceX's own fifty percent weather call, and the bigger institutional question — whether this kind of Congressional rescue is a one-off for a decadal-survey darling or a genuine check on executive budget power — is still completely open. So what happens the next time a flagship mission without Roman's pedigree runs into the same knife? Nobody's answered that yet.
